  • 10+ years of legal experience, including significant in-house experience
  • Active state bar membership in good standing, preferably in California or New York
  • Excellent people management skills, including experience building, leading, and coaching legal and other professional teams
  • Expertise in legal and compliance areas relevant to GiveWell’s work, including nonprofit law, data privacy, contract negotiation, and employment
  • Prior success leading complex legal or compliance projects with cross-functional stakeholder engagement
  • Strong communication skills, particularly in translating complex legal issues into clear guidance for non-legal colleagues

  • Experience in philanthropy, global health, or international development
  • Experience managing or partnering with adjacent functions, such as grants administration or HR
  • Experience with international legal and regulatory environments
  • Experience with legal technology and self-service/automation tools

What the job really is

As the Head of Legal at GiveWell, you will lead the legal function and develop a legal strategy as the organization scales. Your responsibilities include managing compliance, overseeing grants administration, and ensuring effective contract management across various functional areas. You will work closely with senior leaders and the Board, providing legal guidance and support to enhance the organization's operations.
